Introducing

2009 Southern Nevada Chapter Scholarship Winner

Melissa Blass

My name is Melissa Blass, and I am currently a junior, majoring in psychology. I was raised in Oneonta, New York which is a small town north of Albany. I love my town and my friends, but I wanted to broaden my horizons when it came time to selecting a college.

City College caught my eye and soon captured my heart. I love the friendly atmosphere, and I appreciate all the opportunity that is open to me on campus. New York City has so much to offer, as well. For me, one of CCNY’s greatest assets is the vast diversity among students and how everyone seems to blend together, creating a great campus feel. My time at City College has flown by, and I’ve loved every minute of it!

For the last three years, I have worked in the Athletic Office promoting games, events, creating fliers, and spreading "Beaver Fever." This is also my third year on the Women’s Volleyball team, and my second year as a captain. I also volunteer with Harlem Dowling, a non-profit social service agency dedicated to serving and assisting children and their families in times of crisis and distress. This group organizes educational and enjoyable monthly events for children on weekends, giving them role-model figures and a structured environment.  When I’m not busy with class, volleyball, work, and volunteering, I enjoy spending time with my friends and exploring the city.

I am extremely appreciative and pleased to be a recipient of one of the 2009 Alumni Association Scholarships. This scholarship will be used to begin paying back my loans and also towards the additional costs associated with being a full-time student in New York City. Again, thank you for selecting me for such a prestigious award.
